This is about the children

Framsókn wants the City of Reykjavík to always put children's interests first.

Framsókn will
  • 01Set up a Family Centre that serves children and families and makes dealing with the city simpler.
  • 02Embed the well-being legislation more deeply into all city work and ensure early support for children.
  • 03Sign Reykjavík up to UNICEF's Child Friendly Cities initiative, with the aim of strengthening children's rights and welfare.
  • 04Offer free swimming for children aged 18 and under.
  • 05Offer free travel on Strætó (the bus) for primary and upper-secondary students.
  • 06Renew playgrounds, with a special focus on better accessibility and more enjoyable play.
  • 07Strengthen child-protection services and the tools available to them.
Ages 0–6
  • 01Eliminate pre-school waiting lists and add more pre-schools.
  • 02Better support families with greater flexibility in pre-school services.
  • 03Improve maintenance and conditions in pre-schools.
  • 04Support a variety of provision models — childminders and businesses that want to open pre-schools or day-care.
  • 05Equalise parental fees for pre-schools and registered childminders from 12 months of age.
  • 06Offer home-care payments for children waiting for a day-care place.
  • 07Support open pre-schools in every neighbourhood for children and parents on parental leave.
  • 08Introduce sibling and neighbourhood priority in pre-school placement.
  • 09Strengthen Icelandic-language teaching for staff and set clear language-proficiency standards.
  • 10Increase the number of pre-school teachers and assistants in cooperation with the state.
  • 11Improve working conditions for children and staff — including air quality, acoustics, lighting and safety.
  • 12Strengthen cooperation between infant health services and social services for children and their parents, in cooperation with the state.
Primary schools
  • 01Provide children with outstanding education in the city's primary schools, helping them realise their full potential and prepare for the future.
  • 02Guarantee good buildings, healthy school meals and safety in primary schools.
  • 03Introduce standardised assessment in every year group.
  • 04Make primary schools phone-free.
  • 05Set up learning hubs for students who need extra support in every primary school, and add more autism units.
  • 06Ensure children with learning or behavioural difficulties get support in their own school.
  • 07Provide specialist services, such as psychology, in schools.
  • 08Introduce positive psychology and mindfulness teaching in primary school to build resilience and help children manage stress.
  • 09Strengthen Icelandic-language teaching for children of immigrant background and open Icelandic-language hubs for grades 1–10 in every primary school.
  • 10Support help with homework.
  • 11Offer free Icelandic-language classes for parents of immigrant background in the city's schools.
  • 12Strengthen support for school leaders and teachers.
  • 13Improve learning materials in primary schools, in cooperation with the state.
  • 14Improve accessibility in older schools and ensure new schools are designed to be accessible to every child.
  • 15Strengthen arts and crafts education and outdoor learning facilities.
Out-of-school activities
  • 01Offer one free leisure activity per year for 5-to-18-year-olds, with an additional grant for children of low-income parents.
  • 02Reduce the school-run for years 1–4 by supporting sports clubs to provide transport to leisure activities.
  • 03Strengthen youth centres, especially for 10–12-year-olds, and add more youth houses for 16–30-year-olds.
  • 04Guarantee that after-school clubs for years 1–4 are open and staffed until 17:00.
  • 05Increase the number of summer programmes and summer-club places so that every child can take part.
  • 06Guarantee continued operation and growth of the roving youth centre, in cooperation with the state.
  • 07Give Reykjavík's Youth Council a paid observer with the right to submit motions in the city's committees and councils, increasing children's access to decision-making.
  • 08Stand by the queer youth centre.

This is about older people

Framsókn wants Reykjavík to be a good place to grow old.

Framsókn will
  • 01Offer a 60,000-króna leisure subsidy for low-income older people, to support activity and well-being.
  • 02Expand the variety and accessibility of leisure activities for older people and take steps to counter social isolation and loneliness.
  • 03Agree with neighbourhood sports clubs to provide sports activities for older people.
  • 04Expand and improve resources and support for older people so they can live at home as long as possible.
  • 05Appoint a liaison who oversees the cases of older people needing extra city services, in cooperation with the state.
  • 06Strengthen the integration of home care and home nursing.
  • 07Expand meal-service options and improve transport services for older people.
  • 08Add more day-care places and improve access to rehabilitation and specialist care, in cooperation with primary healthcare.
  • 09Strengthen welfare technology and digital skills among older people.
  • 10Counter abuse of older people through expanded education and awareness.
  • 11Add more benches in the public realm and improve walking routes around the city, consulting older residents.
  • 12Re-establish an active seniors' council.

This is about homes

Build more, more varied and more beautiful housing. Make sure people in the city have a roof over their heads.

Framsókn will
  • 01Increase the supply of plots and ensure planned, build-ready plots for up to 3,000 apartments at any given time.
  • 02Reduce fees on underground car-park construction and remove parking-space requirements for people's homes.
  • 03Build apartments that meet residents' needs — with good light, green spaces and at least one parking space per apartment.
  • 04Build out new neighbourhoods, including Keldur, Geldinganes and Úlfarsárdalur.
  • 05Protect green spaces and densify only where it makes sense, always taking infrastructure into account and in agreement with the local community.
  • 06Ensure infrastructure is built alongside new neighbourhoods.
  • 07Improve communication with developers and make the administration more efficient and transparent.
  • 08Support the rental market through non-profit rental companies.
  • 09Maintain the requirement that 5% of new apartments be social housing.
  • 10Add more housing options for homeless people and for people coming out of treatment or incarceration.
  • 11Eliminate waiting lists for housing for people with disabilities.
  • 12Build more quality-of-life and service hubs for older people.
  • 13Make sure the city's fees do not push housing costs up unduly.

This is about getting around

Framsókn wants the city's transport to be efficient and safe, with real freedom of choice between modes.

Framsókn will
  • 01See the Transport Compact through, while seeking a different design for the Borgarlína along Suðurlandsbraut.
  • 02Speed up construction of the Sundabraut.
  • 03Improve traffic flow and traffic-light control.
  • 04Push for faster delivery of grade-separated junctions at Bústaðavegur and Reykjanesbraut.
  • 05Strengthen public transit with dedicated lanes, an improved route network, good bus shelters and more frequent service.
  • 06Build safe walking and cycling paths.
  • 07Guarantee parking at new apartments and good access to P-spaces in the city.
  • 08Honour the agreement on Reykjavík Airport, under which the airport stays in Vatnsmýri until an equally good or better location is found.
  • 09Remove parking fees in the city centre after 18:00.
  • 10Lower public-transit fares for university students.
  • 11Add more EV charging stations at city car parks, including at primary schools.
  • 12Connect Gufunes to public transit.

This is about culture

Reykjavík should be a living city of culture, with the arts and creative industries thriving in every neighbourhood.

Framsókn will
  • 01Better support music schools and improve children's access to music education.
  • 02Strengthen libraries as cultural hubs in every neighbourhood.
  • 03Create more opportunities for young people in the creative industries, including a youth house downtown and more creative summer jobs.
  • 04Strengthen culture and arts festivals and add more family festivals in the city's neighbourhoods.
  • 05Set up rehearsal facilities for grassroots music.
  • 06Strengthen the Family Park and Petting Zoo and explore strengthening it as an amusement park in cooperation with private partners.
  • 07Make Reykjavík a Christmas city, with a Christmas village downtown and more decorations in every neighbourhood.
  • 08Add more events in the city's swimming pools.

This is about people's welfare

Framsókn wants the city's welfare services to be accessible, humane and effective — for everyone.

Activity and well-being
  • 01Set up an Activity Centre that simplifies welfare services for adults.
  • 02Better support young people who are out of school and work, with more activity programmes.
  • 03Defend human rights and counter discrimination.
  • 04Take action against loneliness.
  • 05Extend opening hours and broaden the use of community houses for every age group.
  • 06Set up programmes such as the highland group for children at risk.
  • 07Guarantee the rights of people with disabilities and their participation in society.
  • 08Support the integration and participation of people of immigrant background.
  • 09Better support people coming out of treatment or incarceration.
Public health and sports
  • 01Make public health and prevention a priority and continue working towards a health-promoting community.
  • 02Maintain strong upkeep of sports facilities and continue building new facilities for children and young people in every neighbourhood.
  • 03Make sure the National Arena is built in Reykjavík and that Laugardalsvöllur is the national football stadium.
  • 04Extend swimming-pool hours to 22:00 every day and reintroduce midnight opening on Thursdays.
  • 05Build a new swimming pool in Fossvogur in cooperation with Kópavogur.
  • 06Plan a new golf course and golf facility next term in cooperation with the golf clubs.
  • 07Ensure Víðidalur remains the centre of horse riding within the city limits.
  • 08Better support fringe sports and a wider range of activity.
  • 09Improve skiing facilities — at Skálafell, Bláfjöll and in a new winter park in Seljahverfi.
  • 10Build a sauna at the Nauthólsvík geothermal beach.

This is about the economy

Reykjavík should be Iceland's business capital. Framsókn will give businesses good operating conditions with an efficient, solutions-oriented and supportive administration.

Framsókn will
  • 01Lower property taxes on commercial real estate and provide plots for diverse business activity.
  • 02Simplify permitting, shorten chains of command and set clear deadlines for case handling.
  • 03Cut complex regulation and make it easier to start a business.
  • 04Strengthen cooperation with the business community and improve information about construction work.
  • 05Support entrepreneurs, innovation and R&D firms — including with workspaces and advice.
  • 06Continue to build the innovation and science community in Vatnsmýri.
  • 07Strengthen Reykjavík as a world-class tourist destination.
  • 08Designate dedicated drop-off spaces for couriers and deliveries to residents in the city centre.

This is about the neighbourhoods

Framsókn wants strong neighbourhoods — with good services close at hand, strong communities and real influence over the local environment.

Framsókn will
  • 01Improve access to basic services in the neighbourhoods, including allowing a grocery store at Úlfarsárdalur.
  • 02Strengthen neighbourhood democracy by reviving residents' councils in closer cooperation with residents' associations.
  • 03Set up annual neighbourhood festivals in every part of the city.
  • 04Beautify the suburbs, improve upkeep of public spaces and add more summer flowers.

A clean, beautiful, green city where outdoor life and nature are accessible to everyone.

Framsókn will
  • 01Guarantee a clean city — paths cleared, streets cleaned and rubbish collected regularly.
  • 02Buy street-cleaning vacuum trucks to lift the finest particulates off the city's streets.
  • 03Care for green spaces and improve public outdoor facilities.
  • 04Add more vegetable gardens and greenhouses at pre-schools, primary schools and community houses.
  • 05Aim for a carbon-neutral city and make Reykjavík a leader in the circular economy.
  • 06Tidy up the city's storage and free up buildings for other uses.
  • 07Ensure a balance between secure water abstraction and public access to outdoor recreation in Heiðmörk.

A safe city where residents feel safe at home, in their neighbourhood and downtown.

Framsókn will
  • 01Improve residents' safety with stronger cooperation with the police in the city's neighbourhoods.
  • 02Take action to combat violence against children.

  • 04Make sure the city centre is safe, both day and night.
  • 05Ensure that nightlife does not undermine the quality of life of downtown residents, in cooperation with city-centre businesses.
